Why certifications matter?

For buyers, a certification can define how a product is produced, handled, documented or traded and can be an important part of supplier qualification.

The relevant certification depends on the product, its production method, the destination market and the requirements of the buyer. For this reason, APLV provides certification information in connection with the specific products and supply requirements concerned.

Responsible Trade

Certification schemes such as Fairtrade establish defined requirements for participating supply-chain actors.

Fairtrade

Fairtrade certification can involve producers, cooperatives, farms, traders and other supply-chain actors depending on the applicable standard. It includes requirements relating to trading practices, social conditions, environmental practices and traceability within Fairtrade supply chains.

EU Organic

EU organic rules define requirements covering production, processing, handling, labelling and the use of the organic logo. For imported organic products, the applicable certification and import requirements need to be confirmed for the product and shipment concerned.

Kosher

Kosher requirements can be relevant to food manufacturers, retailers and ingredient buyers whose products must meet specific kosher standards. The applicable status should be checked against the individual ingredient, processing conditions and certification scope.

HACCP

HACCP is particularly relevant to food manufacturers, ingredient buyers and importers evaluating supplier food safety systems. It provides a systematic approach to identifying hazards, establishing controls and monitoring critical points within food operations.

Which Certification Is Relevant to Your Product?

The right certification depends on your product, application, destination market and customer requirements.

  • What should buyers verify when sourcing organic vanilla?

When sourcing organic vanilla, buyers should verify that the supplier holds a valid organic certification recognized in the destination market. The certification should clearly cover the vanilla products being purchased and remain valid for the current trading period.

  • Are organic requirements the same for spices and vanilla?

While organic certification follows similar principles across agricultural products, certification scope varies between products and operations. A company may be certified for vanilla, spices, essential oils, or only selected product categories.

Importers should always confirm that the specific spice being sourced falls within the supplier's certified organic scope rather than assuming all products are covered.

  • Why is HACCP important if a product is already certified organic?

Organic certification focuses on agricultural production and handling practices. HACCP focuses on food safety by identifying, evaluating and controlling potential hazards throughout processing and handling.

For many food manufacturers and importers, both organic compliance and HACCP-based food safety systems play an important role in supplier qualification and risk management.

  • How does Fairtrade certification support responsible sourcing?

Fairtrade certification is designed to promote responsible trade practices and improve economic opportunities within participating producer communities. However, Fairtrade applicability depends on the product, producer organization and supply chain involved.

Buyers should verify whether the specific product and transaction are covered under Fairtrade requirements before making sourcing decisions.
